1976 - LeMans win 1977 - LeMans win 1981 - LeMans win |
This car was developed hurriedly (constant rules changes seem
to necessitate
quick race car development decisions - hence Singer's gray hair) but
was
one of Singer's most successful projects and was responsible for some
of
the most exciting come-from-behind LeMans victories.
Power went from 520 to over 640 hp with twin turbos. For the 1981 LeMans, Singer used some Indy car experience and entered the same two 5-year-old 936s from previous years, winning the race by 14 laps. |

For 1981 the 924 GTR was given a 16-valve prototype motor, which became the 944S engine. The 1981 GTP turbo version put out 420 bhp at 6800 rpm and had the honor of spending the least amount of time in the pits at LeMans: 56 minutes, which included 21 fuel stops at 2 1/2 minutes each. |
1981 - LeMans 1st in class and 6th overall (on street tires!) |

Starting with a 936 chassis, but utilizing 50-percent stiffer riveted and bonded aluminum, the 956 was developed in just over a year, salvaging technology from the Indy program. It put out over 620 hp DIN at 8200 rpm and sported Kevlar carbon-fiber body panels and a 0.35 drag coefficient. In its first race, the 956 won LeMans 1-2-3. |
